FOOD 21 (MAT 21) – sustainable food production

FOOD 21 is a research programme involving about a hundred researchers who are working together to find ways of achieving an ecologically and economically sustainable system of food production. These are our areas of research:

Crop production
Livestock
Product Quality
Consumer Behaviour
Farmer Participation
Systems Analysis
Possible scenarios for food production in the future

The programme was started in 1997 and will terminate in 2004. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is responsible for the programme, but research is also being done at the universities of Uppsala, Gothenburg, Lund and Umeå.

In 2001 phase two of the programme was started. By using knowledge and results from the first four years, we are working in phase two to bring together results from different areas to achieve an overall picture of how food production may appear in the future.

Funding
FOOD 21 is funded by the Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research.
